WEEKLY THOUGHT
đ Our Preseason Message: Taking Ownership
Our recent session with the Jacksonville menâs lacrosse team focused on one main theme: taking ownership of your experience. While outcomes arenât always in your control, the inputsâyour daily habits, your standards, and your mindsetâabsolutely are.
We focused on 4 main topics as you can see below: standards, constant performance improvement, being connected, and playing to your strengths.

Standards: Build the Process
We discussed the difference between goals and standards, emphasizing that:
Goals are performance-based and can be tough to control.
Standards are behavior-based, guiding what you do every day.
Itâs easy to say you want to win a championship. Whatâs harderâbut more impactfulâis setting standards for practice intensity, film study, communication, and accountability. By focusing on behavior rather than outcome, you create the foundation that helps you reach your goals.
Constant Performance Improvement
It's better to be consistently reliable than occasionally extraordinary. Consistency is key to constant performance improvement. If you want to be your best, improvement never steps. Find ways you can be consistent in your work.
Dedicate 15 minutes a day to extra skill work, jump rope, or watching film.
Take the initiative to seek feedback from coaches and teammates.
Push your limits by making uncomfortable tasks comfortable, and then repeat.
Keep a notebook: jot down takeaways from practice and filmâthose details compound over time.
âSteal repsâ through visualization; mental practice can be powerful in refining your skills and composure.
Connection
Success in lacrosse isnât just about individual talent; itâs about alignment and trust. Even when things donât go according to plan, staying connected can salvage the moment.
Connection = Communication + Chemistry. Stance, body language, shared terminology, and intentional time together all reinforce unity.
Connection builds resilience when situations get unpredictable. If youâre committed to the same standards, you can adapt as a unit rather than as isolated individuals.
Connection was a major theme Coach Joe Amplo instilled with Matt and their team USA unit in 2023.
Play to Your Strengths
We advised players to develop their weaknesses but ultimately play to their strengths. We both have had impactful experiences which led us to not just focusing so much on our weaknesses. We strived to make those better, but doubling down on our strengths and making those a focus yielded some great results. I (Deemer speaking), will always be grateful to Dr. Greg Dale from Duke for that!
We hope you find this helpful as a player, coach or parent when thinking about some core areas of focus heading into this Spring.
Best,
