Hey everyone,

We’ve had an awesome week at FCL. We just released a new podcast episode with legendary coach Cindy Timchal, one of the best to ever do it. And earlier this week, we hosted a webinar with LIU Offensive Coordinator Kyle Hayes on how to build your offense around core principles. There was lots of great teaching and great dialogue; Kyle’s presentation was extremely impressive.

Our message today is simple, but powerful. We’re diving into a concept that applies to every athlete, coach, and parent: mental toughness. What it actually is, why it matters, and how we can practice it in sports and in life.

Let’s get into it. Happy Friday ☕️,
Matt & Deemer

💭 WEEKLY THOUGHT
🤔 Do the best you can, with what you have, wherever you are…

What is Mental Toughness?

Mental toughness gets thrown around a lot. People often associate it with being loud, intense, or emotionless. But that version misses the point.

Last week, I saw a video on instagram by a speaker named Alan Stein Jr. The definition he gave was simple and powerful:

“Mental toughness is the commitment to doing the best you can, with what you have, wherever you are.”

That’s it.

It’s not about yelling. It’s not about hiding emotions. It’s not about pretending you're fine when you're struggling.

Mental toughness is about effort. Accountability. Focus. It’s a commitment.

It’s about doing your job in any environment, no matter the circumstances. Whether you're behind on the depth chart, recovering from an injury, or playing in tough weather, the standard doesn't change. You do your best with what you've got.

Why Does Mental Toughness Matter?

Here’s why that matters. This kind of mindset cuts out what the speaker called a “trilogy of weakness”:

And the reason that makes you mentally tough is it automatically eliminates a trilogy of behaviors that are behaviors of the weak. They are behaviors of people that are soft. And what are those behaviors? Blaming, complaining, and making excuses.”

Alan Stein, Jr (via Instagram)

Those are easy traps to fall into. We’ve all been there. But the people who grow the most in this game are the ones who take full responsibility for their performance and their response.

They don’t wait for ideal conditions. They don’t point fingers. They focus on what they can control and commit to doing it well.

That’s what we’re aiming for. That’s what builds real toughness.

By the way, this is much bigger than just lacrosse or sports. It’s one of the reasons sports are so powerful. You get to practice cultivating this mindset (yes, it’s a skill you need to practice) that will serve you in many other aspects of your life.

🔥 RECRUITING COVERAGE

Recruiting classes have taken shape as a large majority of the top 100 commits on the men’s and women’s sides have made their decisions. Terry Foy of Inside Lacrosse posted some interesting graphics tracking the class rankings by school, including how they’ve shifted over time and where each class lies over the first four weeks of September.

Women’s 2027 Class Rankings by School

Boston College made a jump with a top lefty addition in Allie Pisano and the classes will likely be locked into these rankings until players are re-ranked. (via Terry Foy/X).

We are also excited to look forward to our Fall Showcase on October 26th at Chase Fieldhouse in Wilmington, DE. We have highlighted some high level 2028s that we can’t wait to have. Many of them have impressed at past events and will look to get on the early radar as coaches begin to flip to 2028 recruiting.
