đ„ Prepping for Sept 1: What to Expect and How to Handle It
For 2027s, September 1 is around the corner.
Itâs the first day Division I coaches can reach out directly. And whether youâre feeling pumped, nervous, or completely unsure of whatâs ahead⊠youâre not alone.
Letâs talk through what to expect and how to handle it the right way.
1. Manage Expectations
Some players will get multiple calls. Others might not hear from anyone on Day 1. Neither outcome defines your future.
This is just a checkpoint, not a final verdict. Some schools move fast. Others take their time. Youâre not âbehindâ if your phoneâs quiet on Sept 1. Stay focused on your own journey. How you respond is key.
2. Respect the Process
If a coach takes the time to call you, respect it.
Answer the phone if you can. If you miss the call, follow up. A short, polite text goes a long way: âHi Coach, sorry I missed your call. Would love to connect when youâre free. Thanks again for reaching out.â
Treat people well. Word travels.
3. Prepare Ahead of Time
This doesnât mean building a resume or rehearsing your life story.
It means doing some homework. Know the name of the head and assistant coaches. Check out the teamâs recent record or roster. And prep 2â3 simple questions you can ask (our September 1 guide is a great place to start).
Coaches remember whoâs prepared.
4. Be Professional
Update your voicemail. Silence background noise. If a call comes in and youâre not in a good spot to talk, let it go to voicemail and follow up later when youâre ready.
This is your first impression⊠it doesnât need to be perfect, but it should be respectful.
5. Just Be Yourself
At the end of the day, this is a conversation⊠not a test.
Coaches already like what theyâve seen. Now they want to get to know you. Your energy, your personality, your maturity. Be genuine. Be engaged. Donât fake it.
Because the best conversations are the ones that feel real.

If youâre ever unsure, be respectful and authentic. Coaches want to get to know YOU.
Final Thoughts
Embracing uncertainty is one of the greatest skills a person can develop. For many 2027s, this will be the first really big life decision you face. We both remember it being a stressful time for us, and have worked with many families in navigating the ups and downs of the process.
In the end, we believe people end up where they are supposed to be, everyone just has their own way of getting there. As always, we recommend focusing on what you can control, and letting go of what you canât. This includes:
Be professional, prepared and always try to do the right thing
Donât compare yourselves to others
Seek help from family, coaches and mentors â people want to support you
Keep an open mind and do your research
This is an exciting time for those looking to play lacrosse at the next level. We wish you the best of luck and look to continue providing resources and supporting our community.
