WEEKLY THOUGHT
đ Supporting Players Without Overstepping
Depending where you are located, you are likely either in the start of your school season, in tryouts or approaching tryouts. This can not only be an anxiety-inducing time for players, but also for their parents. Today weâre going to provide some thoughts for parents in helping their child navigate through this process.

A Story from a Parent
Weâre not parents ourselves, but we work with a lot of them. One mom recently shared her experience when her daughter didnât make the varsity team as a freshman.
Her daughter was devastated, and as a parent, she wanted nothing more than to fix it. But instead of stepping in, she let her daughter navigate the disappointment herself.
Fast forward a few years, and that same player went on to become a standout athlete. Looking back, the mom was grateful for how things unfoldedânot because the setback wasnât painful, but because it gave her daughter the opportunity to decide.
âShe was destroyed, and I just wanted to fix it because who really likes to see their child crushed after hours and hours of hard work? Well, look at where we are now. Life is filled with disappointments and looking back I am grateful for the way that first year turned out as she had a choice: lay down and quit or prove them wrong, but it was her choice not mine...â
Short-Term Disappointment = Long-Term Value
From what weâve seen, the players who come out stronger arenât the ones whose parents step in to smooth the path. Theyâre the ones who learn to handle setbacks, figure out whatâs next, and take ownership of their own journey.
That doesnât mean parents shouldnât be involved. Encouragement, perspective, and guidance go a long way. But at the end of the day, the response to challenges has to come from the player.
Did they get cut? What do they want to do about it? Are they not playing as much as theyâd hoped? How will they work to earn more time?
Sitting back and letting them process disappointment might be one of the hardest parts of parenting. But from what weâve seen, the players who learn to handle adversityânot avoid itâare the ones who thrive in the long run.
Theyâll remember that they found a wayânot because someone fixed it for them, but because they figured it out themselves.
If you have more thoughts or opinions on this, or you have a story to share, please shoot us a reply. Best of luck with your upcoming seasons!
